There are a lot of ways to deodorize shoes using items found in the home.

  1. Baking Soda: You can make small pouches of cheesecloth filled with baking soda (about 2 tablespoons). Place one pouch into each shoe, toward the center of the shoe, and cover the shoe with plastic wrap. Put the shoes somewhere where they will not be disturbed. The pouches can be reused between wearings, until you can smell the odor on them.

  2. Salt: Remove any special insoles you have in the shoes, and shake the shoes to dislodge any accumulated matter in them. Clean the inner sole with a dampened paper towel, until oils stop appearing on the towel. Sprinkle salt into the shoes, paying special attention to areas where the foot sweats most, such as toes, then rub the salt into the soles of the shoes. Leave the shoes until you wish to wear them again (at least a couple of hours), and remember to shake the excess salt out before putting them on.

  3. Dryer Sheet: Place one in each shoe and leave over night.

  4. Cat Litter: Place cat litter in a small pouch (the toes of clean, old pantyhose make ideal pouches), and place inside shoes. Leave overnight.

  5. Lemon Juice: Dampen a few sheets of old newspaper with lemon juice. Crumple, stuff into shoes, and leave overnight.

These are just some of the home remedies available for shoe odor.
