What is the history behind the sport?

There are two different theories as to how tennis came to be scored the way it is.
The first theory is that tennis scoring is based on medieval numerology, in which 60 was considered to be a good number, and the scores for early tennis matches were determined to be 15, 30, 45 (rounded down to 40) and 60 (game).
The other theory bases the scoring on the clock, with the score being called after each 15 minute segment. This, of course, does not explain why 45 was rounded down to 40.
the tie-break was not introduced until 1965.
