I recently made some decorated cupcakes that required Oreo halves. I tried several methods: serrated knife - lots of crumbs, both halves would shatter and a plain knife (slowly) - lots of crumbs, both halves cracked too.

The best way to cut Oreo cookies in half is to first freeze the Oreos, then cut them with a very sharp blade. This will keep them from crumbling. Then allow the frozen Oreo to come back to room temperature and use for whatever you wanted the halves for, such as toppings for cupcakes.
