The Vietnam War, which actually started in 1945, between the Vietnamese and the French, and which ran 1975, was one of the longest and most unpopular wars in history. United States involvement began in 1955, by sending in "advisors". While there are no exact figures, it has been estimated that between 58-60,000 Americans were killed during the Vietnam War, and approximately 1-2,000,000 Vietnamese deaths.
You also need to bear in mind that most counts of fatalities for the Vietnam War do not take into account war-related deaths in Cambodia and Laos.
