I usually just use my forearm to get a straight angle and set my camera on my arm and take a pic with my other hand. This just sorta helps me frame the subject that I am trying to take a photo of, and ensuring it's as straight as can be. Another helpful hint is to look for straight lines behind the subject like in the background to help act as a guide, for example if they are standing near a doorway, I like to use the door frame as a straight line guide.
